It's great to have football back and nothing better than a derby day! So expect a good standard of football for both sets of passionate fans. It's nice to be playing back at home as been on the road for quite a few games to date.

We know that town will pose a threat and have a very good side, but we are improving day by day and now have a squad that is capable to push on and climb the league.

Sunday saw us dominate the game in the Vase where we played some exciting football and was just lacking that next goal to kill the side off. Before this again good win in the Sussex senior away to Worthing Utd 5-1 which leaves us with Vardeanians in the next round at the Withdean Stadium. The support we've had from the fans and committee has been superb and the lads will need that again today!

Today's Opposition - Eastbourne Town FC

Eastbourne Town FC Club History

Eastbourne Town is the oldest senior football club in Sussex having been founded in 1881 as Devonshire Park, being named after it’s first home ground – A venue now known for staging one of the pre-Wimbledon tennis tournaments. In fact, it was the arrival of the tennis at the ground which ultimately was to lead it becoming the predominant sport and the subsequent relocation of both cricket and football. After five years of playing at the Park, the club moved to the newly opened “Saffrons Field” colourfully named after the variety of crocus which had been cultivated on the site for use in the preparation of medicines.

In 1889 the club changed its name to Eastbourne and fielding a side of ‘gentlemen amateurs’ began to play a dominant role in county football winning the Sussex Senior Cup eight times, and being runners-up on a further three occasions, up to 1907. In 1907 the club aligned itself with the then Amateur Football Alliance and split from the Football Association becoming founder members of the Southern Amateur League where they remained until after World War II. During the 1920’s the club won two League Championships, reached the final of the national AFA Senior Cup in for consecutive seasons, winning on two occasions, and made five further Sussex Senior Cup Final appearances albeit with only one success. The following decade did see a further two Senior Cup victories and success at the first attempt in the RUR Charity Cup. Good attendances saw the ‘popular’ Town Hall side of the ground asphalted and a new wooden grandstand erected behind the goal at the Larkins Field end.

The ground survived World War II intact with friendly matches regularly being played there. In the summer of 1946 the pitch was moved closer to the cricket ground to facilitate the Town Hall side being terraced, the Meads Road end section being covered in 1962. Following one post-war season in the Southern Amateur League, the club joined the Corinthian League in 1946 where they remained until the competition merged with the Athenian League in 1963. In the immediate post-war years the Saffrons attendances averaged 3,000 with the ground record of 7,378 being set when the Southern League side Hastings United visited in an F.A. Cup tie on the 10th October 1953. During this era, there were further Charity Cup successes, a Sussex Senior Cup win in 1953 and an AFA Invitation Cup success in 1970. Two years later, after more than eighty years of being known as the “Town Club”, the club's name was changed to its present form. In March 1969 the wooden grandstand was destroyed by an arsonist and although temporary cover was provided, it was twenty-five years before a replacement was opened; the stand being named of the club stalwarts Sid Myall and Taffy Jones.

Failing attendances made it uneconomic to continue in the Athenian League and in 1976 Town resigned, their final match being in the League’s Cup Final where they lost 1-2 away to Cheshunt. Accepted into the Sussex County League the newcomers lifted the Championship at the first attempt and in the following year reached the final of the Sussex Senior Cup.

Thereafter the first team’s best finishing position was third on two occasions but generally, the trend was downwards. The installation of floodlights for the 1994/95 season saw a resurgence of results, therefore, it was a shock when after finishing ninth in 2000, a year later they found themselves relegated after dropping ten places and finishing next to bottom. An immediate return to Division One was almost achieved in 2002; however, promotion was won in 2003.

On their return to Division One, Town was fifth in 2004 and, after two further seasons of consolidation, the League Championship was again secured in 2007 and with it came promotion into Division One (South) of the Ryman Isthmian League, the club having to complete minor works having pursued a programme of ground developments. The club, who hold the prestigious F.A. Community Club status, received a reprieve from relegation in 2010. Subsequently, the club strived to retain its place in the Ryman League but despite finishing eleventh place in 2013 a bottom place finish in 2014 saw them relegated back to the County League.

A spirited attempt to make an immediate return was thwarted when the side failed to reproduce their good early form after a long mid-season lay-off and they eventually finished fourth but did have the satisfaction of lifting the Sussex RUR Charity Cup for the sixth time moving them to within one victory of being the fourth most successful club in the competition.

Good starts were made in the past few Senior Cup competitions but had no success until reaching the quarter-finals in 2019, losing to a strong Brighton and Hove Albion under-23 side. Town has finished in the top five of the league since leaving the Isthmian League.

"Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success."

We are Langney Wanderers

The club was established in 2009/2010 and joined the Lewes & District Sunday League. In 2012 they applied for membership of the East Sussex League, gaining entry to the Premier Division for the 2012–13 season. The club were Premier Division champions at the first attempt, winning 17 of their 18 league matches, and was promoted to Division Three of the Sussex County League.

Langney were Division Three champions the following season but were unable to be promoted to Division Two as their ground did not have floodlights. However, after finishing third in Division Three in 2014–15 the club was promoted after planning permission was secured for floodlights.

In 2015 the Sussex County League was renamed the Southern Combination, with Division Two becoming Division One. The 2016–17 season saw Langney win the Division One Cup, beating Southwick 3–0 in the final.

The club initially played at Shinewater Lane, the former ground of Shinewater Association, but due to problems with the pitch they played at Eastbourne United Association's Oval ground during the 2016–17 season, before moving to Eastbourne Borough's Priory Lane ground for the 2017–18 season on a three-year agreement.

"Self-belief and hard work will always earn you success."

The 2017/18 season proved to be a huge success on and off the pitch, Langney finished runners up in the SCFL Div 1 and losing semi-finalists of the Division 1 cup.

2018/19 sees us enter the FA Cup for the first time in our short history. The club ultimately succeeded in its initial goal of staying in the SCFL Premier division when they finished 15th out of 20 teams.

2019/20 The season suffered an early curtailment following the COVID-19 pandemic while the club was well placed in 9th position before its null and void conclusion.

Around the SCFL

A thumping 8-0 win at Hassocks kept Horley Town at the top of the table, which included a hat-trick for Adam Grant and a brace for Sean O’Toole to ensure Town remain the only unbeaten team left in the division. Two points further back Saltdean Utd kept up the pressure on Horley with a 3-1 win at Crawley Down Gatwick.

First-half goals from Reece Hallard and Ryan Warwick put the visitors 2-0 before Philip Johnson reduced the arrears on the hour mark. An own goal by Michael Ball sealed the points for the visitors.

AFC Uckfield went down 2-0 at Pagham but remain level on points with Saltdean, Sam Connolly and a Jazz Rance penalty move the Lions into 6th place.

Newhaven stayed in touch with the top three after a 2-0 home win over Alfold. Two early Lee Robinson goals ensured the points stayed in East Sussex although they trail Horley by five points having played the same amount of games.

Eastbourne Town completes the top five after defeating Lancing 3-1. An early lead for Lancing from James Waters was cancelled out by Sam Cole, two late Nathan Crabb goals sealed the win.

Late second-half goals from Lewis Parsons and James Miram-Batchelor gave Little Common a 2-0 win over struggling Horsham YMCA. A first-half Max Hollobone goal gave Peacehaven the lead at Loxwood, but the home side fought back in the second half to win 2-1 with goals from Tadley Bromage and Callum Dowdell. Both sides finished with 10 men after red cards for Luke Brodie and Lawrence Sanded.

Steyning Town put Eastbourne Utd to the sword with a 5-0 home win. Braces from George Cousins and Thomas Howard-Bold ensured a bad day at the office for United. The win lifts Steyning above Broadbridge Heath whose game was postponed due to Langney’s involvement in the FA Vase.

Lingfield matched Steyning’s result thumping the bottom side East Preston, a day after the resignation of EP boss Terry Dodd with goals from Sami Bakhit, Tyler Cox, Siao Blackwood, James Allen and Jamie Bakhit completing a comfortable win.

In the Buildbase FA Vase Langney Wanderers suffered penalty heartache once again after a 1-1 draw at Epsom & Ewell. Mohamed Ali Mekawir gave Wanderers the lead after 19 minutes but a late equaliser from Charlie Penny sent the game to penalties which saw the hosts triumph 3-2 and travel to Saltdean Utd in the next round.

Under 23 News

Langney's Under 23's got off to a tough start in the league with a narrow 3-2 defeat against Newhaven and fiercely contested derby match against Eastbourne Town. Results though have turned with 3 wins on the bounce.

Following an excellent first-half performance against AFC Uckfield we went in at half-time 4 nil up at the break, but the Uckers came out the second half firing and clawed back 3 goals but we just about saw the game out to spare our blushes.

Next up we travelled to Hailsham Town in the Sussex U23 Challenge Cup, an excellent 3 nil performance saw us pick up our first clean sheet of the new season. We were then back in league action as we beat Eastbourne United 4-2 at the Oval, though it could have been so different if United had not missed a penalty early in the second half.

Next up the 23's travel down the coast to play Seaford Town tomorrow night (21/10/20), before we welcome Saltdean United the following week (29/10/20)

Huge thanks to our U23 sponsors this season,
