Langney Wanderers v Hailsham Town

Updated: Aug 10, 2020

08/08/20 - Priory Lane - 14:00 KO - Pre-Season Friendly

Welcome to Priory Lane

Well, what can I say about the last few months? Firstly we all at Langney Wanderers would like to thank all the amazing people who work in the NHS, all the fantastic keyworkers who continued to work under some extremely difficult circumstances and not forgetting the care workers who were so badly ignored. We would also like to pass on our condolences to those families who have lost loved ones and those who have lost jobs in these unprecedented times.

Football is back! Well sort of for now.

We've unexpectedly got a new manager, so a warm welcome to Alex Walsh who comes to us from a coaching position at Worthing FC under Adam Hinshelwood. So expect to see both new and old faces on the pitch as Alex looks to make his mark. We still don't have a definite start date for the SCFL season but they have been told they can potentially restart on the 5th of September. But the FA Cup extra preliminary game looks like it will be our first game as it has been pencilled in for Tuesday 1st of September. The draw for that is scheduled to take place on the 18th of August and we will let you know who we will play via our social media channels and club website.

As you notice you are reading this on a phone or computer screen rather than on a paper programme. This decision is nothing to do with COVID-19 and all about offering the best programme possible for fans and sponsors. We fully understand some fans won't like this decision but we want to be at the forefront of the future of grassroots football. Also as the game will be behind closed doors we will be trialling live streaming for the home friendlies. So fingers crossed we won't have any technical issues.

Today's Opposition

Today we welcome neighbours Hailsham Town to Priory Lane for our first pre-season friendly. So a warm welcome to Kevin Roberts, his squad and the club officials from Hailsham Town. Hailsham had a difficult season last year with a mainly young group of players before the early curtailment, so they will be hoping to improve this season and build on last years experience. Which they will no doubt and look for a solid top-half finish!

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

We are Langney Wanderers

The club was established in 2009/2010 and joined the Lewes & District Sunday League. In 2012 they applied for membership of the East Sussex League, gaining entry to the Premier Division for the 2012–13 season. The club were Premier Division champions at the first attempt, winning 17 of their 18 league matches, and was promoted to Division Three of the Sussex County League.

Langney were Division Three champions the following season but were unable to be promoted to Division Two as their ground did not have floodlights. However, after finishing third in Division Three in 2014–15 the club was promoted after planning permission was secured for floodlights.

In 2015 the Sussex County League was renamed the Southern Combination, with Division Two becoming Division One. The 2016–17 season saw Langney win the Division One Cup, beating Southwick 3–0 in the final.

The club initially played at Shinewater Lane, the former ground of Shinewater Association, but due to problems with the pitch they played at Eastbourne United Association's Oval ground during the 2016–17 season, before moving to Eastbourne Borough's Priory Lane ground for the 2017–18 season on a three-year agreement.

" One who gains strength from overcoming obstacles possesses the only strength which can overcome adversity"

The 2017/18 season proved to be a huge success on and off the pitch, Langney finished runners up in the SCFL Div 1 and losing semi-finalists of the Division 1 cup.

2018/19 sees us enter the FA Cup for the first time in our short history. The club ultimately succeeded in its initial goal of staying in the SCFL Premier division when they finished 15th out of 20 teams.

2019/20 The season suffered an early curtailment following the COVID-19 pandemic while the club was well placed in 9th position before its null and void conclusion.
