Having come over to Langney in pre-season it's been 100mph but I've enjoyed it immensely. We've brought in a couple of new additions to add to the squad which has also been encouraging. It's obviously been a slightly different pre-season to the ones I'm used too. Usually, you have a few weeks to prepare and plan fixtures that fit your schedule and make sure everything is in place for the upcoming season but everyone has been very supportive and helpful which has made this transitional period a lot smoother.

Pre-season has gone well for us. Having played teams in leagues higher to ourselves has been a huge benefit to us as it gave us an idea of where we are at. We've competed well in large spells of those games which again brings confidence within the group.

Tuesday night saw us in the Emirates FA Cup game against a very good Tower Hamlets side. I feel everyone that came to watch us certainly left entertained and what a way to get back into football and having the fans back was brilliant. The second half showed that we didn't surrender and continued to work hard and eventually found the goals that secured us a win into the next round.

On today's game, we know Pagham will be an organised side with some good players so we expect a stern test for our opening game of the season. But something we are all looking forward to!

Today's Opposition - Pagham FC

Pagham F. C. Club History

Formed in 1903, Pagham FC had no ground of their own to start with and played in various farmers’ fields until 1950 when they were given a spare field at the far end of the cricket club in Nyetimber Lane to use permanently. The club joined the Sussex County League Division Two in 1970 and they were almost promoted at the first attempt, but after finishing third for two successive seasons a downward spiral set in and ended with the club having to apply for re-election to the league in 1977.

Following the rebuilding of the team in 1978, the club finished third, but the year after they won the Division Two Championship. Two years later the Division One Championship was added but sadly relegation followed in 1984.

1987 saw the Lions win the second division title and this was followed by back to back First Division league titles in 1988 and 1989. In 1989 the club also won the RUR cup under manager Dave Kew. Unfortunately, there was no escaping relegation in the 2004/05 season as the Lions dropped back into division 2, but in 06/07 they roared back to the top flight as champions.

The 2014/15 season saw a new era at the club with Tony Shea, having taken over as chairman, teaming up with the return of Gary Block and Dave Berkowitz to push the club to new heights, with the club eventually finishing 3rd. 2015/16 started with a new boss in Jon Tucker.

The 2015/2016 season began in storming style for the new boss, but after some early season excellent results, several disappointing performances towards and over Christmas cost Tucker his job. In came the management duo of Mark Bennett and Richie Hellen who helped them to finish 6th in the newly named Southern Combination League.

2016/17 dawned with considerable hope for first-team success and the first piece of silverware for almost 30 years came to Nyetimber Lane when the Peter Bentley cup was won. The game was the last in charge for Mark Bennett who was replaced by a joint management team of Richie Hellen and former under 21 team manager Tom Simmonds.

The 2017/18 season started in excellent style with some memorable cup wins, including a re-appearance in the RUR cup final and that went along with a good run of league results that ended with the club finishing third in the league.

2018/19 started with a magnificent unbeaten run of 15 league games and ended with a horrendous run of 2 wins in 22 matches, losing all of the last 9, Plans were put in place for changes both on and off the pitch for 2019-20. After a false start, the appointment of Kerry Hardwell turned fortunes around and the team finished in a respectable 13th position in the aborted season, having been struggling to get out of the bottom three for several months

"Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success."

We are Langney Wanderers

The club was established in 2009/2010 and joined the Lewes & District Sunday League. In 2012 they applied for membership of the East Sussex League, gaining entry to the Premier Division for the 2012–13 season. The club were Premier Division champions at the first attempt, winning 17 of their 18 league matches, and was promoted to Division Three of the Sussex County League.

Langney were Division Three champions the following season but were unable to be promoted to Division Two as their ground did not have floodlights. However, after finishing third in Division Three in 2014–15 the club was promoted after planning permission was secured for floodlights.

In 2015 the Sussex County League was renamed the Southern Combination, with Division Two becoming Division One. The 2016–17 season saw Langney win the Division One Cup, beating Southwick 3–0 in the final.

The club initially played at Shinewater Lane, the former ground of Shinewater Association, but due to problems with the pitch they played at Eastbourne United Association's Oval ground during the 2016–17 season, before moving to Eastbourne Borough's Priory Lane ground for the 2017–18 season on a three-year agreement.

"Self-belief and hard work will always earn you success."

The 2017/18 season proved to be a huge success on and off the pitch, Langney finished runners up in the SCFL Div 1 and losing semi-finalists of the Division 1 cup.

2018/19 sees us enter the FA Cup for the first time in our short history. The club ultimately succeeded in its initial goal of staying in the SCFL Premier division when they finished 15th out of 20 teams.

2019/20 The season suffered an early curtailment following the COVID-19 pandemic while the club was well placed in 9th position before its null and void conclusion.

Around the SCFL

Goals and penalty shoot-outs were in abundance as the 2020-21 Emirates FA Cup began ahead of the Southern Combination League season.

Alfold produced the score of the round, 9-1 winners over division lower Shoreham, six of those goals coming in the first half and a forty-five-minute hat-trick for Devon Fender in what was the club’s FA Cup debut.

Horley Town are through to the Preliminary round after a 1-0 win over league rivals Eastbourne Utd at The Oval, Adam Grant with the winners setting up an away trip to Isthmian League Kingstonian. Langney Wanderers reward for disposing of Tower Hamlets 3-1 is another home tie and also with Isthmian League opposition in the shape of Harrow Borough, goals from Gary Ingram, Lewis Broughton and Ali Mekawir, the latter believed to be the first Solomon Islands player to score in the FA Cup.

Eastbourne Town triumphed 3-1 away at Saltdean Utd, two first-half goals from Dan Rogers and Brad Pritchard gave the visitors a commanding half time lead and despite Paul Rogers pulling one back for the hosts, George Taggart made the tie safe in the last minute to send them to Faversham Town in a week’s time.

Horsham YMCA suffered a 2-0 defeat to Fisher Athletic while East Preston were also on the wrong end of the same scoreline, Chatham Town the victors at The Lashmar. Loxwood joined them through the exit door after a 3-0 defeat away to Broadfields Utd.

Newhaven needed penalties to get past Lingfield and it took the same for Hassocks against Balham both games finishing 2-2 after 90 minutes, Haven winning 5-3 whilst the Robins edged a tight 5-4 contest. Lancing went out of the cup by the same method, Phoenix Sports going through 11-10 on spot kicks after the sides shared six goals.

Little Common squeezed past AFC Uckfield with a with Ryan Alexander goal whilst Broadbridge Heath sent Raynes Park Vale packing with a 3-1 defeat, Jake Hull, Dan Webster and Jamie Taylor on the scoresheet for the Bears.

Crawley Down and Peacehaven both saw off South East Counties League opposition to take their places in the next round, Down edging out Crowborough Athletic 4-3 which included two goals for Ben Chowney whilst Haven won 5-3 at Bearsted coming back from 3-1 down.

Pagham beat Fleet Town 2-1 at Nyetimber Lane, David Crouch and Callum Chambers on the scoresheet while goals from Harry Heath and Joe Fitzpatrick gave Steyning Town a 2-0 away win at K Sports.
